How can I see my External Drive

Hi,

Please forgive me if this has been posted before. I've tried a search on the board and I cannot find anything that help me.

I have recently bought a Seagate EHD400gb. I installed it-did a full back up with the Bounce Back Express software that came with it. Disconnected the drive as recommend (Ie through the safely remove hardware icon.)

Reconnected the next day ad now I cannot see the drive. I have checked device manager etc and it seems to be working ok.

Help please-also remember I'm blond.

Have you tried clicking on my computer to see if it's listed there?

  • Hi rizla-yes I have and it's not there:confused:
  • Hi dihunny

You say that you have Disconnected the drive as recommend through the safely remove hardware icon

I am not familiar with this icon but reading what you have said I would say that you can’t see your drive because you have removed it from your system

We have an maxtor external drive fitted to our pc and after use we just switch it off using the power switch
  • Hi Natjay,

I thought that too-but when I replug it in and switch it on-nothing happens. Where as the first time I plugged it in - am essage came up saying found new hardware.

  • Go to Start --> Run and type in diskmgmt.msc and OK. See if the disk shows there.

    Hi,
Sometimes XP does not show up these external drives correctly. Try this

Click on Start, My Computer. Then assumimg the drive is not visable, go to the address bar and click the Down Arrow to the right. Does it appear in the list?

I have had a quick look at what that icon is supposed to do and it does say that it is to stop a drive before you unplug your hardware so I don’t know why you can’t see your new drive

so If you turn your power to your external drive off and then turn it back on again you still don’t get the new hardware Icon
  • Hi Toxteth and Phil,

Can you tell me how to paste a screen print into this post and then you'd be able to tell me?

I can't see it in the list.

  • Hi Natjay,

    That's correct.

dihunny I dont know if it's the same problem but when I got my external hard drive it was not formatted and I could not see it in 'My Computer'. If that is the case then perhaps this post can help
