  • thanks for the supportive replies- things really have got to a head when in summary, my mum had a moment of conscience and splurged out a massive list of what was wrong with my wife!

Obviously this has been disturbing for us and has made my mrs even more uncomfortable but also more determined to reach our goal :T

Your wife is a brave woman. I'd rather sell myself on street corners than move in with my in-laws. Good luck with the saving up.

really appreciate your sentiment- she is a tough cookie indeed; putting up with my folks requires nerves of steel, the patience of a saint and the determination of an olympian! In my eyes she has buckets of each of those qualities even if my folks are too blind to see it :smileyhea
  • Well soon after my last post, things went sour very quickly on our part and in haste, we moved out into a rented place :o

It's now been a year of renting and we have had a difficult time with an awkward Landlord who has let us down in sorting various repairs that have needed to be done. Also, it's hard to ignore the 10k in rent we have paid along with all the other associated costs versus staying at my folks!

So we are going to try again

Need to toughen up and realize a couple of years of hard living could translate into a better future :)
  • OP have you done a list of what your outgoings are?

I understand it's hard but only £200 a month savings on £35k seems to be a bit low and there maybe things you can do it improve your savings. I'm on around £23K and save at least £400 a month with rent, HP, bill etc. Don't have a 'hard' living either. Things like a cup of coffee each day on the way to work, the magazine on a Saturday etc. soon add up.

I personally think it only works (moving back) if you are on your own and not paying rent (or a very low rent). Good luck though - maybe set some ground rules for try two.

Thanks for taking the time to reply :) We have looked closely at our expenditure but I'm sure theres room for improvment-

Yes it would be much easier if I was on my own but I guess we are an example of actions having consequences! It will no doubt be hard but I'm feeling positive and have to give it another go especially as my folks are being so gracious after we walked last time :)
  • I am living with my mum with my partner....! We are saving. Its going well - better then expected. It does have its moments but I would say it is worth it to get on the ladder. We don't have the added complication of children and it is just my mum who has been very welcoming but I have had to learn to bite my tongue.

Good luck for your 2nd try! I hope it works for you are hopefully with the new government scheme you will be out in no time!
