transferring medical insurance with pre existing condition

Hi

Have been with Groupama Medical for many years through employer (benefit). Recently our division has been bought out by another company.

The new company uses Bupa. With me having a pre-existing condition and ongoing treatment I obvisouly didn't want to join Bupa with exclusions.

Initially the new HR department said they would just transfer the policy over. However now they have come back with the following

"Groupama has informed us that the scheme is with your old employer not us, and as a result we would need to join a Groupama scheme.

This would then keep you with Groupama, but as a new member not a transfer.

Our broker will recommend the best options for us taking into account that we have a group scheme. "

I'm getting a bit concerned about this now. Surely this is quite a common situation to be in? What is normally possible here?

thanks

Firstly, does the employers Bupa policy even exclude pre-existing conditions? My last employees Bupa scheme was non-underwritten and included pre-existing conditions.
  • note sure but going on the initial response from HR

As you have on-going treatment, it would be difficult to have you underwritten and we would not want you to have exclusions, so in the case we would keep you on your current policy and provider.

    Job done.

Your company (looks like) will pay for your group lever (correct spelling!) policy - or there may be others who also have ongoing treatment so they'll keep a few of you on the previous group scheme.

  • yes that is what they said initially but then they changed their story once they had spoken to Groupama - please read first post.

    thanks
  • can anyone help? Or do I just need to wait and see what the broker comes back with?

    thanks

condescending response but are you saying they initially stated you would stay and now you're not able to?

Groupama have to offer you group lever terms, have you asked them?

  • apologies - not intending to be condescending.

Yes when I first asked HR they thought it would be possible, but when they investigated they said it was not.

what do you mean by "group lever terms"?

    thanks
  • Many thanks for that reply - very helpful. I will get back to HR and see what they say.

I suspect that the poster meant 'group leaver'.

When I was employed I was with Bupa under the company scheme, and developed several conditions, so did not want to lose my cover. When I left work due to ill health Bupa arranged for immediate transfer to the personal scheme with all cover intact which I now pay for privately. These arrangements can be made.

I suggest that you contact groupama yourself, explain the situation, and ask them what they can do to ensure that you retain your existing level of cover. Then present this information to HR and tell them to get on with it. It is highly likely that the cost will be considerably higher, and you may need to give them a push, but they should sort it out.

    Are you in a union?

I'm in a fairly similar situation as you describe above. Could you please look at my new post on this forum - "Bupa corporate/personal cover help please"

I'd be interested to hear your take on my situation.
