To be honest, most oil paintings aren't worth a lot of money.

If you think you may have a masterpiece on your hands then the best bet is to photograph it as well as you can and send them to one of the big four (Sotheby's Christies, Phillips', Bonham's) I think they all have valuation services - this is a link to Sotheby's one which I know is free: http://www.sothebys.com/content/dam/sothebys/PDFs/estimate_form.pdf Don't be put off by them being "big" names, they'll still value it even if it turns out to be the top of a chocolate box.

Come on people, it's not difficult: lose means to be unable to find, loose means not being fixed in place. So if you have a hole in your pocket you might lose your loose change.

Go to a bricks and mortar auciton house they will tell you if it is worth bothering with. I bought an original oil in a mixed lot three weeks ago, paid £5 (before buyers premium) for the lot. yet I've seen others go for hundreds.

It really all depends on the artist and condition. My oil is an unknown local artist working at turn of last century so although it is an attractive (if rather grubby) painting it has no value.

If there's an artist name on it then you can try looking him/her up online, or get advice on that. Most auction houses that deal in paintings will have free valuation days where you can take it in, some also offer email valuations/advice, but they can take time.

As above though the chances are it won't be worth much, I had one my grandad had kept that must have been well over 100 years old and I couldn't get a tenner for it (it wasn't pretty!).
