eSure car cover cancellation charge £80!

Hello good people.

I am awaiting the details to be confirmed in my account but a warning to some. Comparison site came in with a good quote from eSure for fully comp car insurance on a 2000 reg car.

I made the mistake (dont ask) of thinking I had the 11 years no claims to apply (was on our main car with my NCD and not my wife's NCD) and then realised when sending the documents this wasnt the case. Letter comes back, that I missed out the photocard copies, called to amend the mistake before sending and see what the extra premium was ...

from £275 they wanted extra £300 for the loss of my NCD on this vehicle and said, no way, cancel it, I will find better.

Was then told that will be an £80 cancellation fee as over the 14 days !!!!!

I fell off my chair - additionally, there would also be the usual removal of the time I had the cover and some extra admin for that.

Ends up that I have paid almost half the original premium to have the pleasure of talking to eSure and cancelling their rip-off cover.

Before the insurance appologists come in stating well its legal, so was child labour until people woke up, and it doesn't make it right or fair. Secondly, if I or any other service company dared to charge those extortionate fees, I am pretty sure they would be suffering in the extreme. What the hell are they doing, sending someone personally to their admin centres in Delhi by air?

Once the confirmations come in, I will gladly post the accurate details.

PS - I have comparisoned for many years and way before this excellent site existed, so I am not some ignorant n00b when it comes to having my eyes wide open with the corporates.

You need to ask them for a full breakdown of the cost.

The FOS supports cancellation fees up to £50 but after the cooling off period some add ons are frequently non-cancellable (eg Legal Expenses) and so you may find it is the accepted £50 plus the £30 for LE or something else.

The biggest cost contributor is the marketing cost, so if you are part of the 70% that buy through an aggregator or affiliate like Confused.com the insurer would have had to pay them up to £100 for your business

Oh it could be - hence why I will be posting the actual costs deducted, but you ae right, I should have noted the breakdown rather than the total...

as an aside (hope this is allowed in context) ... it seems I am not the only one having these issues with eSure:

If this is not allowed, my apology, please remove the link.
  • By the way what is the "FOS"?

Got their letter a few days ago though asking me to send back the certificate which I never received of course

Insurance was taken out on the 11 Feb 2012.

FOS = Financial Ombudsman Service, the point of complaint escalation for insurance, banks etc

If you tell them you never received the certificate they may send you a declaration to sign instead.
