no claims discount on new policy

Hello everyone,
I have been the registered keeper of different cars for over 10 years. The insurance policy that has covered these cars has been in my wife`s name, with me as a named driver on the policy. I have never had any trouble in taxing the cars over the years even with the 2 different names. My question is, if I now get a policy in my name, (to try & tidy things up) will I be entitled to the maximum no claims discount that I have built up as a named driver on my wife`s policy? or will I be treated as having no NCD at all?.

I believe that as a named driver you don't build up NCD. You could try telling an insurer that you have been a named driver on your wife's policies and see if they will give you any NCD. Don't be surprised if they say no though.

Yes thats true but not relevant to the OP as he has been a named driver on wifes policy for 10 years
Also with co's such as Direct Line giving named drivers discount, the discount only applies whilst you stay with DL, if you move co's they won't usually recognise the NCD built up in this way.

i know its not transferable to another company, but if he was named on his wifes policy with directline he would have 10 years no claims now, stay with dl on ur own policy for 1 year then move

Would you only have 1 years no claims to provide to another company if you were to do this?

Yes Ian I believe you would only have 1 yrs NCD to take with you as other co's don't accept NCD built up as a named driver.

  • Thanks for your replies, When i contacted the insurance company,(the post office) they confirmed that I would not be entitled to a NCD in my own right as I was only a named driver. What I was able to do was to get my wife to transfer her NCD to me so instantly i have a full NCD:j She retains her NCD on our other car. Thats a result:rotfl:

Have they matched your wifes NCD as a sweetner for the first year only? I only ask as when we got our second car they matched hubbys full NCD on the second car but only for the first year. At renewal it went down to 1 year.
