Used car tax with V5C
I left a deposit with a car dealer last weekend. As standard policy they don't put tax on the car, instead they provide you with the relevant documentation to get this done yourself.
They gave me the current MOT certificate as well as the V5C (but only sections 1-8) they said this section is enough. I was under the impression I needed section 10 (V5C/2) to get car tax but they say that I'll only receive that part when I pay for the car tomorrow when I go and collect the car.
They are a well known company so I imagine they know best.
When asked about getting tax from the post office they asked me to fill in section 6 and sign at the bottom, then mention to the post office that I have bought a car from a dealer, show them the MOT cert and my insurance documents and they will allow me to tax the car.
Can somebody please confirm this is ok and I'm not going to be stuck without tax when I come to collect the car tomorrow?

if you were going local dvla then yes they are correct
but your not, the log book isnt in your name so post office cannot collate your insurance policy to name in log book0 -
I recently bought a car from a dealer and they organised 6 months road tax (which we paid for) before we collected it.
To be honest, I thought that's how they all worked, not very helpful to you really, sorry.0 -
I'm ex DVLA and you could always use Sections1-8 to tax it at PO as new keeper as long as you fill out your details in section 6. I left 3 yrs ago though so things may have changed!
And the garage is doing things completely the wrong way around (they should retain and post off sections 1-8, and only give you section 10)* Rainbow baby boy born 9th August 2016 *

Ye that's what I thought, however I was allowed to tax my car with no problems, they informed me that they would send off the section 1-8 for me and to allow up to 2 months for the new vehicle registration to arrive.
Thanks for the replies everyone, but it's now sorted
