Flights London to Manchester

I need to travel to London in a few weeks from Manchester for a meeting in the Kensington area. The meeting will finish at about 4.30pm. I'm looking at travelling by plane which I need to get booked, but I've never done this journey before and wondered what time I need to book my return flight for bearing in mind London rush hour, check in times at Heathrow etc? I would hope to book a flight for about 7.00pm but wondered how realistic this would be? Alternatively I could travel by train but that works out more expensive. Any info greatly appreciated

Now33 - if you advise your date of travel & times, someone will see if they can help, particularly with getting cheaper train tickets!0

Is it realistic to catch a flight at 7.00pm, yet leaving the centre of London at 4.30pm?0 -
Surely it's a lot easier and quicker to get the train. What dates/times are you travelling?0

I would agree with hlhassall, quicker and easier on the train. Also much more flexibility if you are running late, or even early! xGone ... or have I?0

The following options are available with https://www.thetrainline.com:
Monday 26th March (single fare options)
Man 18.45 - Lon 21.06 (£25)
Man 19.15 - Lon 21.34 (£25)
Man 20.15 - Lon 22.57 (£12.50)
Wednesday 28th March (single fare options)
Lon 18.35 - Man 20.51 (£58.50)
Lon 19.35 - Man 21.54 (£25)
Lon 20.05 - Man 22.24 (£25)
This is going from Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston.
You can get flights with BA for about £73.00 to gatwick but you have to add the cost of getting from gatwick into london onto that.0 -
definately take Virgin Trains. by the time you take a train down to Gatwick or Heathrow, check-in, waiting in the lounge, board, fly, go through arrival procedures, walking to the station from the terminal at Manchester Airport, taking the train to city centre, you would have easily been at Manchester if you had taken the train!
unless you can get a cheap flight with VLM and there's a flight at the perfect time.0 -
Heathrow would be the best option for a meeting in Kensington if you choose to fly, as you can get the tube straight from heathrow to south Kensington (piccadilly line). gatwick and city airport are at the wrong sides of town.
It would probably still be quicker overall to get the train though (and much better for the environment). The No. 10 bus goes to Kensington from Euston station, or take the circle line from Euston Square station. Get an oyster card (https://www.tfl.gov.uk) before you go with pay as you go money on it, or you will be ripped off on tube and bus fares! You can keep the card for the next time you are in london.0
