Dial-up Internet Access - no dial tone

I have had NTL cable broadband for over 5 years now and my modem has just died. NTL (now Virgin) are sending an engineer to replace it next Friday.

In the meantime I am trying to set up dial-up access as a temporary measure. I have installed and registered a free trial of AOL which claims to work with cable lines but whenever it tries to connect it complains that there is no dial tone.

I'm using an 8 month old Acer laptop with built in modem and have tried two different modem cables. I have also tried using my son's old IBM laptop with its built in modem and get the same result. If I plug a telephone into the line there is always a dial tone. I have also manually set up a dial-up connection to dial another home phone but it still reports no dial tone.

I suppose its possible that neither of the modems are functioning as they have never been used before. Does anyone have any other ideas?

  • Hi,

Try going to the control panel>Phone and Modem option. Select the modem> Properties> and then modem. If you untick "wait for dial tone" it should get you up and running.

Your options may be slightley different.

    Regards

Have you tried using a different cable. It may be that the one you are using is faulty. I am not sure how cable works, do you have microfilters? It could be the AOL software, so go into Start, Programs, Accessories, Communications, New connection wizard. Type your mobile number in to their and try calling it. Ensure your speakers are switched on so you can listen to it dial.
Let me know how you get on.

Device Manager says it's working OK and I can successfully query it in modem properties.

As I said in my original post, I have tried 2 different cables and even 2 different laptops and dialling a friend's home phone with a manually created connection.

Microfilters are not used with cable broadband.

I am beginning to think that NTL somehow block data calls on their phone system unless you have an NTL dial-up account.

Having given up trying to get a dial-up connection with my phone line, I have now got a nice fast 3g connection with my mobile phone.

Now I would like to share it with another pc on my home network. The mobile phone is connected to my laptop and I have set up Internet connection sharing on that. The rest of the network consists of a wireless router with a desktop pc connected by cable to it.

The desktop pc is able to get a connection occasionally but it doesn't last very long. I suspect the problem is an ip address conflict. Do I need to set the router up in a particular way to deal with this?

    Any help much appreciated.

  • I was able to get 2 computers using a 3g phone internet connection ... just plus the cable straight thro' ( ie from pc to pc not via the router) on the connection settings of the pc connected to phone, go properties, advanced and tick internet sharing

assume you have a data bundle/ day package
