Netbook not charging

Hi all,
I've got an Acer Aspire one ZG5 netbook and it's not charging up. I can use it fine plugged into the mains, but as soon as I unplug it, it turns off straight away.
When I hover over the battery symbol, it says 'fully charged, battery 0%'.
However, when I have the mains lead plugged in, the charging light is only there periodically which concerns me that there may be a connection problem rather than a battery problem.
Before I go splashing out on a new battery, is there any way I can check whether it is a connection problem (which will presumably be more problematic)? Or should I just go ahead and get a new battery?
Thanks in advance

Whilst plugged into mains, remove the battery, then re-insert it. Give it 5mins and wait to see if there's any percentage movement.0

Thank you, I'll give that a go tonight."Good financial planning is about not spending money on things that add no value to your life in order to have more money for the things that do". Eoin McGee0

I've tried this now (twice) and there's no change. I also left it charging for a while and then removed the cable and it switched off immediately again.
To clarify my original post - if I hover over the battery icon it says fully charged, but if I click on the battery icon it tells me it's at 0%."Good financial planning is about not spending money on things that add no value to your life in order to have more money for the things that do". So what happens when you leave it on battery? It dies?0

Yes, as soon as I take it off the charger it is just off. Doesn't shut down, just completely loses power instantly."Good financial planning is about not spending money on things that add no value to your life in order to have more money for the things that do". Eoin McGee0
