Waitrose fail to convince with explanation for price hike on Golden Syrup

I contacted Waitrose with a question about the price of Golden Syrup. this is what I said..........

"Could you please explain your pricing policy as it affects Tate and Lyle Golden Syrup (907g). I shop at Waitrose Abergavenny and asked the staff in store to explain why the price of syrup has risen from £1 to £1.98 in the past six months. The price of £1 was not a special offer at the time. I use golden syrup regularly and I am well aware of its price. "

They said...........

" prices vary from year to year in response to factors such as significant shifts in weather patterns or increases in fuel prices"

Are they being serious? What kind of idiots does Waitrose think we are? In their reply they do not question my facts nor do they explain why the factors they have identified have affected the price of this product. YES other supermarkets have put up their prices of this product but you can still get if for around 1.50 in other supermarkets.

Is there something we should know about Waitrose pricing policies?

Does anyone know what has happened to the factory gate price of Golden Syrup?

Tate and Lyle Golden Syrup (907g) is £1.98 in ASDA as well.

And shouldn't your question actually be directed to Tate and Lyle rather than a retailer?

I use syrup a lot but don't bother with Tate & Lyle anymore. Aldi has 680 gr Syrup for 99p, I cannot tell the difference and I like the price and the squeezy bottle it come in.

Look at what the sugar price has done over the last 4-5 yrs then tell me that this has been reflected in the price you pay (and I know it's coming down at the moment but there's always going to be a lag whilst manufacturers use forward purchased stock)

  • I prefer Lyles Black Treacle, 54p per lb, sainsbury. It has a strong flavor,
good source of minerals, about as healthy as sugar gets.

half a pound of tuppenny rice
    half a pound of treacle

Black Treacle and Golden Syrup are completely diferent things though,

You cant substitute one for the other in any known recipe.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

OP - Same price everywhere, nothing to do with Waitrose it's the manufacturer that's raised the price.

    Cheapest is Sainsbury's at £1.78

£1.98 at Tesco, Asda, Waitrose, Ocado.

This is the crux and what Waitrose should have responded to the OP to start with

you can but the results would be 'interesting', not necessarily horrible though and the payback is that black treacle genuinely contains decent levels of iron and other vitamins and minerals. Even though a UK treacle tart uses golden syrup really you can make it with black treacle, then its more like what is known in the US as a 'shoofly' pie, its an acquired taste but once you get to like it, you'll love it
