Declaring a car SORN

Not strictly an insurance question but hope its ok in this section.
Basically im 21, just passed my test and looking to pickup a new car. I've found one I like but I need a few weeks before I can sort the insurance (need to move some money about etc).
I was under the impression you could park a car on a driveway if it had tax but no insurance, but after a bit of googling it turns out you cant, unless the car is declared SORN!
Seems like a lot of pointless red tape but ah well. Does anyone here know how long a SORN application takes to process?
I dont want to apply for the SORN thing now as I havent purchased the car yet but will need it valid from the day I buy it.
Anyone knowledgeable on this sort of thing?

Immediately. As soon as you've got the car on your drive, go online and sorn it.
Theres a reference number on the V5C, just get a copy of that and the registration. You'll need those I believe.0 -

Why would you need a few weeks to sort out insurance? you can do it online in minutes and will need it to drive the car home to your path.
If you do sorn it then you will also have to cash the tax disc in.
Just realised why you cant insure straight away, so if its only for a couple of weeks then you should get away without sorning it as long as you keep it on the drive.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0 -
Why not buy it and ask the seller to keep it for you.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0
