Faster Payment mistake

Hi

I have two bill payments to Santander in my online banking list. I meant to pay a small sum of money into a savings account but inadvertently paid it to the other. A bad hair day on my part!

The complicating factor is that the second account was a FlexiLoan which I paid off last year and is therefore closed.

I would be grateful if someone could tell me whether I ought to contact Nat West or Santander in the first instance?

Many thanks:)

If the account is closed the money should be returned to your bank but I'd contact your own bank and tell them what's happened and what to do about it.

    Thank you.

Do you know how long it might take for the money to be returned?

I don't want to create a fuss if it's going to happen automatically.

If the account is closed then it should bounce back within a couple of hours. If the Natwest loan still shows in online banking then it is still open and will credit the loan account.

If its credited the loan account then contact Natwest and they should be able to credit the funds to any other Natwest accounts you hold. Bit more complicated if you don't have any other Natwest accounts though - go to a branch and withdraw the cash would be the simplest way.

I was paying from a Nat West current account TO Santander.

It was supposed to be to a savings account, but accidentally I clicked on the line above in my payees and sent it to a now closed loan account with Santander.

Delete the old payes in NW then you wont do it again, same with old cancelled DD's

Oops, sorry. Advice should still be roughly the same the other way round though.

    Oh dear.

Not only is it all resolved, but in fact the payment was immediately rejected. What fooled me was that the rejection appeared above the payment - I was looking below the transaction.

Thank you for your responses. I am an idiot and need a holiday:D

i did similar to this a month or so ago. or so i thought. natwest sent me a letter saying they may have messed up faster payments to different account numbers with the same account no and sort code.at the time i thought i had mistakenly paid money to skintmums barclaycard instead of my own. 2 weeks on they admitted their systems made the error. it didnt affect me really as i was able to correct it myself but could have been a hassle for others
