VM would have sold your number on. Within 3 days of getting my VM phone installed I got a cold call an insurance company, when I asked how they got my number I was told I called them previously on the landline.0

I've found that the only way to stop the calls is to answer them and keep the caller on the phone for as long as possible by repeatedly asking them to repeat themselves, misunderstanding what they are saying, in fact acting the senile OAP, though my wife says I don't need to act.
Never give out your real name and address if they don't have it, just confirm that you are who they say you are even if it is not your name, agree to everything they try to sell you and when they call back deny everything.
Debt collectors are the best as they normally only have your phone number and someone else's name and address.
Ask them for their name and address so that you can send them an invoice for your time answering their questions.
They eventually get fed up and stop calling.0 -
Buy a phone that has call blocking built in, such as ones from Panasonic, allows you to block upto 30 numbers.0

the phone with call blocking built in may be a necessary sugestion.
We keep getting same calls asking for someone else, and despite always asking them to take out number of their list, they never do.0
