BT Master Socket wiring

For ages our phone line has been crackling as if someone is screing paper, you cannot hear anyone at the other end. I have been in touch with BT and they did a line check, it appears if th fault is inside. The internet connection is slow and disconnects regularly.
I purchased a new master socket ne5, something like that and there are only three terminals as opposed to 6 in the original that I removed. I seem to have found the correct wiring formation but it still crackles badly. I really need one of those tools for pressing in the wires between the blades, I used an old thin screwdriver.
Does anyone know the wiring diagram for one of these boxes, I can only find drawings for the boxes with 6 terminals.

Are you certain it is a master socket and not just an extension because master sockets have more in them and using them in place of a master socket should not be done.
It's unlikely to be the master socket, if it is, then BT should replace it for free because it's their responsibility. You shouldn't be removing it.
I did it myself and a BT engineer asked whether it was a master socket and mentioned that they are different to extension sockets. I changed it back after he had left. The reason why I changed it was because I purchased one with an integrated ADSL filter. I sent that back and got a master socket lower face replacement filter.
Mine has screw connections.
Chances are that the problem lies outside your property. It's probably a fault with the old telephone cables that BT uses. BT line checks are a bit useless IMO.
I had a similar problem with line noise some years back and a Openreach special faults engineer had to replace a cable to stop the problem. That was after a very long time. My phone would go dead at times due to a break in the cable when the cable heated up in the summer. I telephoned BT while noise was on the line and the woman could hear it herself. Having BT do a line check while my line was dead was the final proof of a problem.0 -
Have a read of this - basically you can't fit an NTE5 socket yourself. You cannot fit a complete socket , just the removable bit after the test socket.
So saying if you unscrew and unplug the bit on the front and then plug the phone into the test socket (via a broadband filter if you have broadband) is it still crackly? The bit on the wall is BT's responsibility. and they should fix it for free. Don't forget to try it with a different filter.
You can do your own internal wiring to the bit with the phone socket that unscrews from the front - this is the bit that requires the Insulation displacement tool.
