Payments showing on credit report

Hello, just trying to help someone who has asked me a question about their credit report -
We know that if there is a CCJ that it will drop off after 6 years from the date it was settled, but
If there is an entry showing late/missed payments but it is not actually in default - how long does that entry stay on?? Is that also 6 years from the start date?
It has never been paid at all as has been put on in error but trying to get the lender to remove it is a losing battle (welcome finance!) it now shows a list of number '6's' & hasnt been updated for over a year - but has not gone to default (8)
The account was ended about 2 years ago and was not even this persons credit agreement (the paperwork was filled out incorrectly and then amended later) but it was still put on the credit report.
They are looking to apply for a mortgage but may have to wait until this drops off (if it does!) at whatever point. Otherwise they are perfectly clear credit wise with no other issues at all.
Trying to look at it before we go to a lender to make sure they will not shoot themselves in the foot.
Not sure if anyone can advise??
They have been trying desperately to get Welcome to sort it out but are just hitting brick walls
