Help rebuild my credit history

Ok I need help, about 5 years ago I was very stupid and got myself into an awful lot of debt with credit cards, personal loans, payday loans, etc.
All ran into arrears, most had defaults issued in 2009.
I finally sorted my self out and went with pay plan. When others were telling me to go bankrupt, I said I wanted to pay it all back. Pay plan really helped and I cant thank them enough. To cut a long story short I was extremely stupid and I have learnt my lesson.
I am now trying to build my credit history up but I need help and advice. I don’t need a credit card but I thought it would help to rebuild my score. However in the past I have had a credit card with, capital 1, vanquish and aqua. You guessed it all the ones that could help me I went into arrears.
I have paid them all off now, which I felt good about but please can someone help me to get a card to start rebuilding my history as these people wont, any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hmm, well you've burned your bridges with the ones who would otherwise be recommended. I can only think of Barclaycard Initial but they are very picky and with defaults on your file it might not be possible - others will know better than I.

There's always the RISE Visa if you're that desperate - but their charges are extremely high..
Never argue with an idiot. Especially not this idiot because I'm always right anyway.

What is showing currently on your credit file? How long did you repay your debts (particularly your subprime cards)?

With defaults of only 3 years ago you'll probably struggle for a while. But in a year or so you may well be able to get a subprime card even from the companies you have previously defaulted with.

I second Tixy. I know someone who got a Cap 1 card 6 years and 1 month after they defaulted with them.

Barclaycard do a "soft search" option on credit card applications online.

I know it doesn't help you now but Cap One will eventually lend again to people who have defaulted. I went into default on my card in 2004, last year I was accepted again and given another chance. I hadn't bothered trying before then so I may have got one sooner I don't know. Everyone makes mistakes and deserves a second chance but it does take a long time before lenders will give you one.
  • Apply to Capital one again and if they turn you down for their classic card they might offer you their secured card.

Capital one gave me another classic card after I defaulted with them six years ago and the default drops off in July so its worth a try :)

Sorry it's a month old post but the OP might have held off and is still looking.

I defaulted on my Capital One Classic card in 2009, it was sold to lowell who I am now paying off.

I applied to Capital One for their Progress card at the end of last month and they've accepted me with a £500 limit.

So maybe worth trying a classic or progress card.

I have 2x defaults from 2009, one is the Capital One (now lowell) and the other is for Halifax CC settled with a partial payment.

    Hope it helps.
