How do I work out how much things cost to run?

We have been using a 500watt oiled filled mini thing, which actually kicked out a quite lot of heat considering its size, but we were borrowing it and had to give it back,
We are only using it to complement our storage heater but now have to decide which one to buy as our house isn't quite warm enough on its own.

A 500 watt heater will give out 500 watts of heat, and will use 1 unit of electricity every 2 hours.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

    .

Cost per hour(pence) = Device power rating (kW) times price per unit (pence per kWh)

kW = kiloWatt = 1000 Watts which is a measure of power (rate of use of energy)

kWh = kilowatthour which is a measure of energy. A unit is one kWh.

So if you have something which has a power rating 2.5kW (and it uses 2.5kW all the time it's on), and you are paying 14.5p/kwh then the

    cost per hour = 2.5 times 14.5 = 36.25p

Things to note - your unit price will likely vary with the first few at a higher price. Usually it makes sense to use the lower tier 2 rate. The power rating of a device is usually the maximum power, and, depending on the device, much use will be at a lower power level. On heaters, thermostats usually turn the heating on and off, so allow for that somehow.

If you have a tv which uses 1W (=0.001kW) on standby, then the cost (at 14.5p/kWh) will be

cost per hour = 0.001 times 14.5 = 0.0145p, or put another way, about 75 hours on stanby costs 1p.
