2?s please - Mango seed?Raspberry prunings?

Hello all and thankyou in advance for any advice.

-I ate a mango today and have its lovely big seed. Confidently went to the Pip and Seed Book(delightfully written)BUT no entry for Mango.
Could I give it a try? In what conditions? Have a good E/S/E-facing kitchen window sill. Orchid bought at auction has been in bloom there since late October.

-next, finally pruned Autumn raspberries right back, but feel reluctant to ditch large healthy canes which already show bud and some emerging leaf. I've put them straight into rainwater - can they be used? In November, I took runners from same and planted them in France. I envisaged cutting the prunings into other lengths, using rooting powder and plonking them in. Would this work?

    Mango story coming up:
Over Christmas, my son and his partner visited us and Pat noticed I had a young mango plant on the windowsill. "Oh, he said, how did you grow your mango. I planted 10 seeds and looked after them so carefully, but six months later, nothing has happened"
I hated to burst his bubble by telling him that I had just stuck it in a pot beside another plant and forgot about it until it started to grow. So, I think the point of this long ramble is that it really just needs time to germinate.

Heeheehee Caroline, I'm an optimist at heart, but even I don't expect to get any fruit from it. Maybe if I stick it in the greenhouse in the summer it will grow to a decent size, but an unusual house plant is all I realistically expect.

  • I have obtained an 'unusual house plant' from planting an avocado seed. No fruit yet, but I shall give it a chance..... just like those mangos, it took *ages* (months) to get going, I just let it get on with it!

(PS, for anyone who wants to try this themselves, when you plant and avocado seed, it should be half in, half out the compost.)
  • took the text below from the link Carolive2CV posted - sounds like mango could be worth a go.

What do we think it means by 'plant with the hump at soil level' ??? which way round would you plant from this instruction????

4 options (as I can work out),
vertically with pointy end up - half seed above soil level
vertically with pointy end down - half seed above soil level
horizontally, laid flat on the soil, half above/below
horizontally, on its side, half above/below?!

"Seedlings are a gamble. Supermarket fruits may have been treated to sterilize, or chilled too long to remain viable. These seeds are normally discolored gray. To grow mangos from seed, remove the husk and plant the seed (before it dries out) with the hump at soil level. The seeds normally germinate in two to four weeks, and do best with bottom heat. Multiple polyembryonic seedlings should be carefully separated as soon as they have sprouted so not to loose the cotyledons. Seedling mangos will bloom and bear in three to six years. "

There's a little bit of advice here and also info about other exotic fruits.

I did grow a mango plant from the stone once, but I only planted it as I noticed that it was already germinating in the fruit - I could see the embryo plant poking out of the stone. It grew very well into a lovely plant with pinky leaves until I forgot to water it for too long.......it was then an ex-mango.

..but the method is the toothpicks/glass of water one. Have never succeeded with this either, but know others have.

Have started with the 'put in a jamjar of warm water which must be changed daily' method. Which reminds me - it stays in the hot water cupboard for at least 2 weeks and than......?
    On verra.
