How can I get a microphone to work -pc

I have one of those hand held microphones that singers use and its has several jack plugs. When I insert it into the plug slot in the back of the pc no sound comes out of the speakers when you talk into it. Now I never thought it was going to be as simple as that.
Basically my daughter wants to be able to put on youtube and listen to a karaoke song on there and sing along to it using the mic.
I'm thinking that this is not going to be a simple proceedure as simply putting the mic in the jack plug hole and off you go!
So hows this done??
