If a town becomes a city, will house prices go up?

If it is being changed to a city and the queen ends up visiting improvements might be made to the surrounding area and it may become a more sought after area! in 2006 we had the open (golf tournament) and they just sort of scrubbed up the local area a bit and put fancy shaped lamp posts and some weird sculptures on the pavements and house prices rocketed! I have no interest in golf so we actually leased our house to some Callaway guys and got a free set of clubs and £10,000 for the week which was quite nice also i gave the clubs away not knowing they were worth a couple of grand DOH!
What supplier of road marking paint do you recommend for improving an area and making prices rocket? Surely this is too good an opportunity to miss for spamming your favourite company again?

I'm originally from Sunderland which got city status waaay back in 92? I think... didn't seem to impact house prices back then. Would probably be worth looking at some of the created cities between now and then for any indications from history really but I certainly was old enough to recall it all happening and definitely don't recall any "wow our house is now worth X" type conversations.

Did no one tell you?..when the sun shines house prices go up... i can not believe you thought that it would be any different as in chelmsford they will soar due to the new city status..go out and buy a range rover on the back of the great news..
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

Chelmsford has already been voted the happiest town and one of the warmest so I think that city status would be less of a priority to me.
