Android phone security, advice please

Just got my first smart phone and although I shall be using it for browsing etc I don't intend downloading apps. I'm so confused and concerned that all the apps want access to my personal data etc stored on the phone. It feels like my privacy is being invaded by the security apps that are supposed to be protecting me.
If anyone has any advice I'd be grateful

Big well publicized awareness campaign going around at the moment regarding exactly this.
No sure of a way of ever truly knowing about any app tbh but, app developers are now more aware users are aware & will no doubt tightening up on it!
Related: Android security apps are mostly useless, says report.
The PDF on the above link is worth checking out plus I installed Avast! Free Mobile Security.

I use Lookout. Very good and doesn't slow the phone down.

I don't envisage downloading apps but as I say this is all new to me so who knows. In the future I might want to. It worries me that even the security software wants to access everything on my phone and I have no idea what they can or will do with this info. I have looked at the privacy policy on avast and it's ambiguous. My contacts, messages and calender etc are private, why do they need access to these and more. I find it rather disturbing.
I just want to feel safe when browsing0 -
To search for viruses etc that you may download when surfing the internet.
If you're not going to use the phone with all it's features why buy a smartphone? You could have purchased a basic phone for £9.99.Estate Agent, Web Designer & All Round Geek!0 -
I use Webroot Mobile Security. It's fee and works just fine.0

Hi, steve1980 keeping up with the Jonses is also very important. Occasionally, I use my smart phone to determine where I am, knowing that I am at home.
I must say it impresses people.

Yes I could have bought a basic phone but I wanted internet access for browsing, especially when away from home. I shall also be using the other functions on the phone. I don't however feel the need to download the latest apps or games.sebastianj wrote: »Hi, steve1980 keeping up with the Jonses is also very important. Keeping up with the jones lol
When buying the phone my criteria were a good deal on calls and internet so I was always accessable to elderly parents and I could always access the internet when away from home. I just want to feel safe and cofident on line.0 -
