I'm sure that this has been brought up before and there is probably a thread that this post should be merged into however, my laziness and /or lack of search-fu has evaded me so I'm posting a new thread.
Once upn a time, a large packet of beef mince at Tesco was 1kg - then it became 900g - now it's 830g - for pretty much the same price. (It's been a 'buy 12 pay £x' for so long I've lost track)-But I have noticed the reduction on wieght being purchased (You really thought I didn't Tesco - shame on you!)
Added to that, items (sharwoods medium egg noodles anyone?) are cheaper buying 2 x 375g separately than buying them together (approx 40p)
Now I know it's nothing new, supermarkets offering 'multi buys' etc at what 'appear' to be better value, but a little bit of simple maths being applied (Nescafe instant coffee as an example - 2 jars are better value than a big tin) to single products against those 'bundled together' - could save us all, over a year, shedloads.
The point of this post? Do the math. Frankly, I'm ashamed that a major supermarket believe they can get away with this - unfortunately - I think they will. If you need assistance - please, I'm sure your fellow MSE converts will help - and if it gets beyond the (quite frankly) riddiculous state of affairs (Martin? You reading this?) that is insulting to the nations Math skill, then hopefullly Mr MSE will take up the baton.
Edit: I should point out that the medium egg noodles ar not the only example I have found of the buying more smaller quantities is better value (try Nescafe Coffee) or that these figures are based on my online shop - or that other supermarkets may well be guilty also - just felt the urge for this edit 'tis all

Not to be rude, but when did this website become about correcting peoples grammar/spelling?
They could talk like a teenager for all I care as long as people help save me money...0 -
Do the Math is an expression rather than incorrect grammar and not everyone on this site will have been educated in the UK - I was partly educated in Canada for example. Being a bit picky methinks.
As for the OP's original point, yes ASDA does that with Nescafe, it's over 40p cheaper to buy 500g in refill packs rather than big tin, Sainsbury's own brand fusilli has worked out cheaper to buy 4 smaller ones than 1kg bag Waitrose essential cottage cheese currently on offer so cheaper to buy 2 x 300g than 600g - they all do it.
How you beat them without having to be Carol Vorderman, is to look at the price per 100g on the shelf label or website for items not on offer. On offers ask customer services if the price per 100g is the offer price.0 -
Asda Shades toilet roll
4 @ £1.72 (43P EACH)
12 @ £4.00 (33.3P EACH)
24 (States Bigger Pack Better Value on the pack) @ £8.67 (36.1P EACH) the 24 are on "rollback" to £7.98 atm making them 33.2p per roll but at normal price they are more expensive than the 12's.0 -

Sorry but you completely missed the point, I wasn't correcting anyone's grammar/spelling. The op was complaining about supermarket pricing being an insult to the nations math skills, and I pointed out that using an american phrase is an insult to their English skills. I was referring to words used not grammar or spelling.
Perhaps if I'd just put "pt ktl blk" you would have understood it better.StuartMacpherson wrote: »They could talk like a teenager for all I care as long as people help save me money...
You wouldn't say that if you'd read as many posts as me.0 -

Yes, we should all perform due diligence even when shopping for sales. Must all business try to scam us? Where is the old fashioned trait of caring for others gone to? Report this to the store manager and stay after them until they get the message that this is not acceptable. They were not taught this at home it seems.0

It did actually take a good few seconds for me to realise what that meant! haha0 -
