Halifax Photocard

Has anyone tried the service?

I've got Ultimate Reward Current Account with them and apparently I can have a photo/picture on my card.

I created something in GIMP but they don't accept it. Basically it's the radioactivity sign. I read through their image guidelines but I cannot see anything wrong with my picture.

My suspicion is they probably think it's weapon related or something and don't know the meaning of the sign. I really like the design and colours and I think it looks really cool. I'll try to send it again today and hope the person checking it will know the meaning...

Anybody successful with having their photo/picture printed on the card? It's my last attempt, then I won't bother.

    I think they are erring on the side of caution.

    Radioactive symbol = Nuclear activity in one way or another. Could stand for anything, from a waste disposal plant to a power-generation plant to a nuclear bomb.

    The design does look cool though :)

    I'm over 30yo :D

    Initially I just wanted something Astronomy/Physics related as those are things I'm interested it.. I went through the photos of the planets, galaxies etc. but they don't look so good + they are photos from the web so not really mine.
    I also think the simple graphics (not photo) is the best on such a limited space like a debit card. Also I had to avoid brands/names etc., so the choice is limited. Always for some reason liked the radioactivity symbol.

    List what you cannot have:

    • you must own the image or have the permission of the image owner to use it
    • if your image includes another person, you must have their consent to use it
    • the image you choose for your card must not contain any of the following:
      • trademarks, logos or company names (e.g. images marked with ® or ™ signs);
      • images or text protected by copyright (e.g. images marked with © or other watermarks or notations);
      • slogans, tag lines, branding, marketing or promotional products, services or images of companies;
      • images of, or the name or nickname of, celebrities, musicians, sportspersons, entertainers, public-figures, film stars, cartoon characters, members of the Royal Family or other famous people;
      • contact information (e.g. telephone numbers, URLs, account numbers, addresses or e-mail addresses);
      • political statements, or images relating to ethnicity or religion;
      • images of flags;
      • images, signs, symbols or text relating to money, currency, drugs, tobacco, alcohol, gangs, hatred, graffiti, betting, gambling, or financial products or services;
      • provocative, lewd or sexual images or content;
      • nudity;
      • offensive material (e.g. images, signs, symbols or text relating to violence, death, injury, racism, cruelty, profanity, obscenity, weapons, firearms, ammunition or terrorism);
      • illegal, anti-social or obscene behaviour, or socially unacceptable groups;
      • content where drinking (or being drunk), smoking or gambling is the focus;
      • text unless benign and in the English language;
      • any image that might reflect poorly or might engender hostility toward company brands (including MasterCard®, Visa®, or Lloyds Banking Group);
      • images that may interfere with the security features of the card;
      • any reference to the Olympic Games, World Cup or any other international branded event; or
      • reference to any bank, building society or other monetary institution

    Which leaves me with some blurry photos from Birthday parties (except those not alcohol related which are few haha) or taken on the street. I don't want to have those on my card for sure. Like I said.. last attempt and then I won't bother and keep it standard (that looks crap, with X in the middle.. X Factor? Whoever designed that card should be shown the door haha)

    I believe the Radiation Symbol is copyrighted by ISO.

    ISO 361:1975 If that helps.

    ISO standards and symbols copyrighted? They are commonly used by everybody, even you ;) Or am I wrong?

    I think they mean their website and the publications of theirs. From ISO website:
    All rights reserved. The material on ISO Online is subject to the same conditions of copyright as ISO publications, and its use is subject to the user's acceptance of ISO's conditions of copyright for ISO publications, as set out below. Any use of the material, including reproduction in whole or in part to another Internet site, requires permission in writing from ISO.
    All ISO publications are protected by copyright. Therefore and unless otherwise specified, no part of an ISO publication may be reproduced or utilized in any form or by any means, electronic or mechanical, including photocopying, microfilm, scanning, without permission in writing from the publisher.

    EDIT: Looks like my symbol is not the ISO one..

    I did say I *believe*; the reason being:

    The New 2007 ISO symbol is covered under ISO 21482:2007 and if you look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:New_radiation_symbol_ISO_21482.svg
    The new ionizing radiation warning symbol (ISO 21482) from IAEA.[1] The IAEA PDF graphic was converted to SVG by Kricke. ISO’s legal adviser says it is copyrighted and, in reference to the use of this image:
    [W]e will not oppose to the use of the symbol as mentioned in your email as long as the following text is included next to the representation of the symbol:
    "This symbol is included in ISO 21482:2007. ISO International Standards are protected by copyright and may be purchased from ISO or its members (please visit https://www.iso.org for more information). ISO has not reviewed the accuracy or veracity of this information."
    …Duly quoted. See Image talk:New radiation symbol ISO 21482.svg for the full exchange.

    Extrapolating that back to the 1975 symbol ISO 361:1975 I would expect that the same applies?

    I could be wrong, I probably am.

  • I don't know. I tried.. didn't work. I'll try again maybe later. I don't want anything else on the card (at least for now). Maybe later when I have more time I'll try to draw something else.

    But it looks like nothing decent will ever be accepted by Halifax.

    Just a bit of advice - dont bother! I've got a Barclays photo debit card and have lost count of the times that I've had staff in places look at it like its some sort of alien thing - worst culprit was in a small branch that almost refused to take it as they'd never seen one before and had to go off and consult with someone else about whether it was legit or not!
