Washing Lines

I've had lines and rotary airers and I much prefer a washing line. Rotary Airers are great if you're short on space but I've found the washing takes much longer to dry especially if it's on the inside of the airer. With a washing line everything can flap about even in a slight breeze and dries much quicker.
Edit: the only problem we have with the washing line is I'm quite short so it's low and I use a prop to get the washing high, my tall OH keeps garotting himself when he walks past the line if there's no washing on it.Dum Spiro Spero0 -
I used to have a line in our old house and I didn't like rotary driers at all (I used to get wooden props from the local sawmill and they only cost a few £'s). When I moved to this house it already had a rotary. I didn't like that either - but since I replaced it with the one I have now, I love it. You can hang a king size duvet cover on it, and it winds up so high that even my 6'2'' son can't take the washing off it unless he winds it down first.
I'm a convert.0 -
I have a rotary airer that was expensive but as long as it lasts (and my friend's has lasted 4 years so far) it will be good value.
I hate hanging out washing, far easier and so tempting to put it in the drier. And trying to judge whether it's going to rain whilst you're out, and if it's worth hanging clothes out - nightmare!
But I purchased a Rotaire Dryline - it's a special cover for the rotary airer whilst it's being used. It has mesh sides hanging down so the top cover & mesh sides protect the clothes from rain (or dew) unless the rain is virtually horizontal! And the top also protects the clothes from bird mess. I love it.
Not a regular / frequent poster so probably can't do a link but if you did an internet search for Rotaire Dryline youd find it. Comes in various sizes for different size airers.
And no I don't work for them, just love the product!0 -

I had a lovely long washing line in my old house but now I have a silly rotary style dryer that fits on the wall at the side of the house - I can't put sheets on it and it doesn't really let the washing have a good blow and dry quickly either.
So frustrating! There is nothing nicer than a long line of clean washing drying in the breeze - simple pleasures! I've never found a rotary drier as good.“I tell you, we are here on Earth to fart around, and don't let anybody tell you different.”

Another vote for the rotaire cover, I use one even during the summer, it's been a god send this year with the weather been so changeable. I would also recommend the Breezecatcher rotary clothesline, it's super strong and is a perfect match with the dryline cover.0

I must be jammy cos I have both. 2 lines from end of garden to house and a rotary. (its a huge garden) I only use the rotary when the lines are full but thats because I don't much like it as it seems to never see the wind and its in the middle of garden, but stuff on the line will be blowing merrily around and the rotary stuff just sags there. maybe its badly placed but any nearer the side of the garden and people will just steal stuff and any closer to the house and the other washing will catch on it.
so my vote for a line and post:)63 mortgage payments to go.

I would recommend a Brabantia Lift-o-matic. Not the cheapest around but well worth the bit extra! You can choose from different sizes - 40-60m of line. The lifting mechanism can be operated with one hand and individual strands of line can be replaced. (Cheaper lines have to be totally rewired and you can never get the tension right)
Ideally, you need a spike set into concrete to stop the line wobbling. They usually come with a cover so you can remove the whole washing line and store it - say if you are having a party/BBQ, and the hole won't fill with rubbish or cut little fingers!

I agree......I have been bugging my OH for about 4 years to get one......we have used tumble dryer and clothes horse inside until now. He finally got me one last week and I love it....it's so much better thn ones I have seen before."More people would learn from their mistakes if they weren't so busy denying them." - Harold J. i just got anew rotary line as the pole on mine snapped and even though i was still using it i hated it cos it was too low. got a 45m one instead of 30m and it takes up same ammount of room cos the lines are closer together which is annoying as stuff doesnt get blown around properly.
dont think hubby will let me have a new one again so soon though so im hoping its rubbish quality and breaks sooner rather than later...not very money saving though is it? lolHave a Bsc Hons open degree from the Open University 2015 :j:D:eek::T0 -
I've got two long lines and two shorter lines in my garden. The two shorter lines are actually one line cut to fit, and there was loads left over. I've had the two longer lines for over ten years now, but the shorter lines are new this year.
If you choose a line rather than a rotary, try to get one with a chain inside. It costs slightly more, but won't sag.
Total cost for my lines - less than a fiver. Very MSE, and I can hang washing in different parts of the garden according to the time of day and whereabouts the sun is.0
