Urgent Car Insurance help needed

Need to renew my policy urgently. Problem is I'm trying to add 17 year old son to policy but the big problem is he's got an IN10 on his lience since he was 15. He got caught on one of those dreaded mini motos and hence the conviction plus 6 points. Quotes are coming out upwards of £1400 compared with £140 for me & dh. Help, where's the best place to try?

Try the usual routes; Confused and InsureSupermarket. Goggling brought up this. I dare say there are others out there.

Has DS sought out further / advanced training? Some colleges of FE do them.

    Make him pay the difference?
  • Thanks for help. The link you gave me wouldn't give me a quote - have to wait til somebody calls (and it won't be today). Tried a lot of the others but loads won't quote for IN10. One of them - think it was confused.com said he was too young to have an IN10 as he wasn't old enough at the date of conviction. I wish it was like that. Asking him to pay difference would take forever as he's on £2.49/hour as an apprentice. Think he'll just have to stick to having lessons at £50 session for now.

  • I would suggest calling a high street insurance broker.. young drivers are notoriously expensive to include on a policy nevermind the no insurance conviction.. was there other offences ie no drving licence etc?

Insurance brokers have been known to negiotiate with underwriters to get a rate which would show as no quote via an online quoting system.

  • Thanks for the suggestion. The only charge they convicted him was the driving without insurance. It was a horrendous experience for us all and what didn't help was the fact that the judge had to adjourn court to find out what points etc. he could impose cos he didn't know!!!! The judge actually dropped the - no licence, no MOT, no road tax and no helmet.

  • I think 1400 is about as good as you are going to get even if he did not have any points. My son was on my insurance for a while and has just got his own he had quotes from 700 to 3000 the cheapest being Bell but he went with Marks and Spencer because they included legal cover and courtesy car which were add ons with Bell. He also put me down as a named driver and the quote was 200 less!
  • I would agree with the other post go to a high street broker not an online one.
Online insurance companies only want the cream of the crop not interested in the other part of the crop.
Give them a try I have a feeling you might be suprised how cheap you might find their quotes.
Why not buy him a push bike then you are quids in !!!

Get him an account with a local taxi firm, it will be cheaper.

I would say that £1400 is a good price, as having a IN10 (driving with no insuarance) has one of the biggest loadings on the policy.

How often will he drive the car?

If is less often it may be worth copnsidering only adding him on the policy if and when required. That way you will get a admin fee and the time on cover, if you do do this make sure you ask the insurer wil they cover your son as a temp driver.
