Seller 'lost' item?

Bit of a strange situation I find myself in. I won an item on the 13th of feb and requested the total payment amount a few days later... but the seller says he has mislaid the item, and won't give me a total amount (P&P wasn't specified). I haven't paid for the item yet.
Is there anything I can do? I notice you can go through ebay if you have paid and not got anything or the buyer (me) refuses to pay, but there doesn't seem to be anything for me to report him to ebay.
I am not that fussed about the item anymore, but I don't want it turned back on me and the seller to make out I have not paid.
Thanks

If he can't find it, he'll need to open a mutual dispute. My TV is broken!

Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j0 -
Did it sell for far less that it is worth?
Maybe the seller is disappointed with the winning bid and is trying to renege on the auction by conveniently “losing” it.
He could have genuinely mislaid it of course.0 -
It could be genuine. I've been in the same situation, lost two items and couldn't send them:o. I sell magazines on ebay. One week when I had a nasty cold and was really unwell I sent 3 magazines to USA without checking them properly. A week later two buyers bought magazines from me an I couldn't for the world find them, I looked everywhere. The buyer from America thankfully contacted me two days later and let me know I sent the her the wrong ones, she was fine about it, sent them back (I paid her for the p&p and sent her the ones she should have had) and the buyers were contacted.
Mistakes does happen. But as Avoriaz suggested if it sold for far less that it was worth she/he might be reluctant to sell it.
It has taught me though to stay away from ebay when I'm under the weather :rotfl:0
