e-cheque?

Hi. Can comeone please explain how long I should expect to wait for an e-cheque to clear? Had an auction end on 14th Feb. Buyer paid on 15th by e-cheque. Stated expected clearance date was today but it is still showing as uncleared. It is the first time I have been paid using this method. Thanks.

From my experience it could take 10 working days (or more) so just be patient it could take a fortnight in total.

Pain in the backside, have a chat with your buyer and explain what is going on half the time they will not know payment has gone through as an echeque and will start champing at the bit.
  • And let's not forget that the reason it takes 10-14 days is because PayPal sits on the money for that time, earning interest. Don't believe the stuff about UK banks taking 8 days to clear the money because it's !!!!!!!!.

They do take forever to clear! Check it in your paypal account as well as eBay though. I have had echeques cancelled by paypal due to a problem, but didn't receive an email to this effect, and still showed on eBay as pending. I only found out by logging into my paypal account.

  • Yes I agree e-cheques are completely bizarre! PayPal give you an estimated clearing time of 5 days or something, but when you look at an individual e-cheque for a date it can be 10 - 12 days from the start of the transaction. Buyer often has no understanding of what's going on so I agree with Hintza important you let them know from your side!
  • Thanks for all your replies. Have e-mailed buyer to let him know. However, surely he must have picked this method when paying for the item so would be aware that it would delay reaching my account? Is this true? He only has a feedback score of 11 and normally pays quickly according to his feedback.

It can happen when there's a problem with your primary funding source (eg. credit card expired and you didn't notice) so it's quite possible he doesn't know.
    My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j
  • Oh right. Thanks a lot for that. Really helpful. Will just wait and see what happens.
  • Have only had one buyer pay by e-cheque, the first time it 'bounced' and didn't clear, it took over a fortnight to be informed of this. When I contacted the buyer, he paid a second time by e-cheque, this time it cleared but still took another 2weeks!

    Good Luck!
