Santander linked account problem

Just opened an esaver account with Santander, but couldn't find anywhere on website to link to an external account, in order to transfer money in, or out for that matter. Tried phoning, but that was hopeless, and expensive.
Noticed that website said a form had to be filled out, giving details of the other bank account. Odd, but went into a branch today for form, only to be told that I couldn't have one. What I should do was, go to the other bank, in this case HSBC, and ask them kindly to transfer money to Santander, which they would do straight away, apparently, and without cost. Well, I've had a number of online accounts, but this is a first
Is this really true, because if so, Santander can stick their account, I want to sit by my pc and administer things, as I have always done, not run down to a bank branch asking favours. What a shower. Can't believe that I am being told the truth, although my opinion of the average bank branch staff is pretty low, they are not usually that bad. Anyone else found an easier way????

Go to payments - 'set up new payment' - enter details in the on-line form (Account number, sort code, reference) then confirm via pass code given on your mobile. Now you've got it all in place.

The next you want to make another payment - go to payments - make payment to that very person/firm. All the details are now in place, you just fill in the amount and if you want the payment to leave 'now' or at some date in the future.

That seems to be ok to pay from the Santander account, but not to import money. The website still insists that I ring up to obtain a form to fillout. Well, I tried that, and went round in circles, press 1 for this, 3 for that, etc., etc. Gave up in the end, and it still doesn't explain the nonsensicle advice I was given in the branch today. Losing the will to live.....

You cannot 'import' money (why would you want to do that).

Just 'export' (transfer) it from the other account, you have the sort code and account number of the Santander eSaver. Transfers go by Faster Payment and are received within minutes.

Are you properly set-up for on-line banking? Can you log into your eSaver account?

Everything is ok, log in no problem, I just want to move money from HSBC into Santander, and vice versa, like I already do easily with some other online accounts. Thats what I mean by importing, normally referred to as push and pull.

You can only authorise a payment to be made out of an account! If you could set up a system online to "take" random payments FROM another account you would be able to ransack anyone's account, just by having their sort code and a/c number.

You need to authorise HSBC to make payments to Santander - fine if you have online banking with both. Just set up your Santander a/c as a payee on the HSBC website. The first payment you make may well take a couple of days to go through, but subsequent payments will be Faster payments. Likewise set up your HSBC a/c as a payee on the Santander website and you can trnsfer money freely between the 2 accounts.
"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.

It's sad that the santander staff were so poorly trained that they couldn't explain this to you.

Sorted. My fault, as usual. Senior moment passed, for now. All taken care of.
