I realise this is contentious but if you want to drive a guzzler then you know you're going to pay more tax. If you don't want to pay so much tax then buy a smaller, cheaper-to-tax vehicle.

Yes, we all pay too much tax but the government doesn't choose your car for you - or, at least, not yet!

I bought my car before the last Government massively increased car tax so unfortunately now I am stuck with paying £245 a year - it would be fairer to put fuel up, I have a small hatchback with a larger engine but do very limited mileage.

If, when bringing in these big rises, they taxed on models from that time onwards it would have been fairer as people could then make a choice on their next model of car instead of backdating it to 2001 models or whatever it was, I don't want to give up mine that I have had from new and has fairly low mileage so far as something for the equivalent price would be probably thrashed/not very good condition.

My car sits in the £130 a year tax band. 51 reg. My tax is due at the end of May so does this mean it will be £135 now?

    I paid £130 May 2011 and £125 May 2010.

Anyone know when the new rates were imposed.
I woke up on budget evening and rushed onto the web site, which was still accepting the "old" price for an April tax disk.

    Was in the link above:

The rates shown apply to tax discs taken out from 1 April 2012.
