I'm slightly confused as to how I managed to get my anti-malarials on the nhs.....

I got doxycycline, 2 month supply for volunteering in Arusha, Tanzania. I paid for my yellow fever injection etc I was told the doxycycline was the only one available on prescription, so took that one. My gp advised it would be suitable to take in arusha....which turned out to be outdated info, the mosquito's had begun to display a resistance to it! So I would definitely advise people to do their own research.

The more I think about it though, its right that it shouldn't be available on prescription :/

i agree that they shouldnt be available on the nhs, BUT if the cost is so expensive then people will just risk not taking any (stupid but we all know there are a lot of stupid people around!) and then the nhs will have a much higher bill for treating the malaria when the patient returns to the uk.

i wonder wether a fixed fee of say £30 for a standard course or something may be the best way for the nhs around this.

    Extremely sensible,

But the problem is The NHS has no provision for that.

You either have NHS treatment, or it's private. There can be no cross-subsidisation of one by the other, and to change it would need an act of Parliament, which would get bogged down with 'Privatising the NHS' arguments, and 'Two tier NHS' arguments and all the other associated distractions that stop us moving the NHS out of the 1940s and into a model that would be sustainable and useful for the future.

People with cancer cannot pay to have a drug that the NHS hasn't approved yet, unless they opt to have ALL of their cancer treatment provided privately.

I completely agree with you and your solution to malaria tablets, but it opens up a huge can of worms!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

But shouldn't be used instead of anti-malarial drugs!

Judging by cats I have had in the past - a side effect of catnip oil will be a lot of crazy moggies following you around everywhere!

There are two main ways to get malaria tablets in the UK.
Visit your GP/travel clinic and obtain a private prescription. Using your private prescription you can purchase malaria tablets in most high street pharmacies.
Usually you will have to pay for the prescription and you will pay a high price for the tablets.
Alternatively most online pharmacies have a consultation procedure which will allow you to obtain malaria tablets online. This is generally cheaper.
You can compare prices of several online pharmacies here:

The cheapest site for malaria tablets is currently: www.medexpress.co.uk
