Where to buy Malaria Tablets?

  • Does anyone know what you are supposed to do if you are going to different continents where the malaria strains are different (i.e. South East Asia and Central America)? The advice on Travelpharm covers both options individually but not what to do if you are visiting both within a few weeks as my daughter plans to do soon.

she should go and see a doctor at a travel clinic asap. not just for malaria tablet advice but also to see if there are any jabs she might need. some will need to be given with a few weeks before she leaves so she needs to go soon.

medicine/jabs for going away can seem expensive, but relative to the rest of the cost of the trip, it's a drop in the ocean and not something worth cutting corners over!

I have heard that tesco is cheap to buy malarone but do not know how! I have looked on the internet and tesco doesn't appear to have a pharmacy! Any help would be greatly appreiciated as am going to mombassa in 7 weeks and there are 8 of us that have been recommended to take malarone. Have been quoted £45 each for a 24tablet course from a local pharmacy, don't know if i can get them cheaper or if this is a good price? Please help!!
:j had malarone last year from tescos, got enough for about three wekeks and it cost around £65 so £45 sounds pretty good to me, Tesco have a good pharmacy but you will need a private prescription to get them
  • i'm looking to buy 88 Malarone Tablets and thats going to be painful £2.15 per tab is the cheapest i've see
  • The cheapest doctorfox.co.uk has Malarone for is £2.52/tablet which includes the cost of the private prescription

the whole reason who can't get things like this on the NHS is because going away to exotic places that require malaria tablets is a luxury and not a necessity. the logic is that if you can afford the trip, you can afford the medication too - which i think is entirely fair!

I totally agree! I dont begrudge paying for malaria tablets, vaccinations etc which are not covered by the NHS - I'd rather that than have the taxpayer pay for it when I've chosen to visit those regions!

  • NHS in Scotland do pay for vacinations required for trips to "exotic" countries. We are just back from Egypt and had the necessary vaccinations by prescription at a cost of £4.00 each my 9 year old didnt pay at all.

We are travelling to Kenya next year and will need malaria.

    Hey,

If you live in a town with a high ethnic minority population you may be able to get your malaria tablets on the NHS. I think it's because they figure it's cheaper to subsidise the cost of the medication rather than spending thousands on treating someone if they fall ill. Check with your GP and also book an appointment with the GP's travel clinic/nurse for vaccinations. Private clinics cost a lot more so you should book in advance for the GP's travel clinic as they are usually booked at least one month in advance.

The type of anti-malaria tablets you will be prescribed depends on the location you're travelling to but you should also take the ones most suitable for you. I had side effects with Quinine (?) so I decided to take the one which you have take daily instead of weekly.

Many of the online doctor and pharmacy services - UK based - provide a safe service for medicines which can add quote bit to the holiday. The cheapest I found was 2.35 a tablet but that didn't include the postage. I did a little comparison for everyone for malarone tabs

    Freedomhealthonline 15 tabs £52.35 = 3.49 per tab postage-free

Boots Online 12 tabs £45.32 = 3.77 per tab postage?

Lloyds Online 15 tabs £59.99 = 3.99 per tab postage?

All these are regular UK doctors and all are registered with the NHS regular the care quailty commission and all us a UK registered NHS pharmacy to send out the meds.
