New car or old car? Advice needed

We have to replace our current car urgently as a member of the family can no longer get in and out of it. We live in the back end of no where, with no public transport (not that they would manage that) and nothing at all within walking distance.

We have some cash to buy a car, but owing to our requirements for said family member we can only afford to get a fairly old car with the money. We've done comparisons between the older and newer models, the newer model is a lot more fuel efficient and I would feel happier buying a newer car as we are less likely (famous last words!) to hit big expensive parts failing.

We have been offered interest free money to make up the difference by another family member, and whilst we are confident we can afford the repayments easily, and they are in no mad rush to get the money back, my husband is suitably reluctant to borrow the cash.

Do we risk spending £1500 a year plus extra fuel costs to keep an older car on the road? Or do we borrow and pay back £1500 a year to buy the newer car?

Thoughts?

We would honestly wait and save up the money if the need for a new car wasn't so urgent.

all you can do is your homework thoroughly and buy wisely whether with what you have or with extra loaned money
also remember because of where you live any problems would need to go back to dealer if arising in warranty period unless you buy a toilet paper add on one

Do you homework and give used cars you look at a good check over yourself. When you're confident it's a solid purchase, pay a local mechanic or RAC etc to do a proper inspection on it. Although it might cost you ~£100, it could potentially save you that alone if you buy a lemon! A good cheap used car shouldn't lose too much value.
