Either the mechanic has made a mistake or his bank have.
he may be a nice person but he may also be in financial difficulties and you paying twice may just be enough to float him.
Sorry I'm very cynical and not very trusting.Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p
It is not illegal to open another persons mail unless you intend to commit fraud - this is frequently incorrectly posted
I live in my head - I find it's safer there:p

Thank you all for your support-still no further forward as (no surprise) the copy of the cheque hasn't arrived (for what its worth) and the mechanic is now waiting for the Co-op to investigate by speaking to Santander. I know my ABC...I am satisfied that they are genuine, and they are not pressing me to pay again while this is going on, but I am worried that the banks do not seem to have clear channels of communication and are so reluctant to help their respective customers. The banks don't seem to understand the urgency-to me as this is a stressful thing to try to deal with and to the mechanic as a small business depends on cashflow. I feel quite wretched that I wasn't more careful in monitoring my account as if the cheque had cleared initially I could have saved all this angst. But the whole thing has reminded me why I rarely write cheques as if the payee doesn't cash them straight away it's easy for things to go wrong if you don't have a lot of spare money in your account!2 years 6 months to go until credit card/loan debt paid off...then start on the mortgage!!!
...but heading in the right direction0
