How to go about selling shares

Hello

A complete numpty question here. Parents have some shares from their former employers (both retired 10 years ago), they are looking to sell these shares and invest in an ISA.

Could someone guide us as how to go about this please? I've googled but can't find anything relevant. No idea of their value at the moment, but would just like some initial guidance.

Many thanks
Monica

Are the shares in a publicly quoted company or a private company?

Do you have share certificates? - or are they in a nominee account?
It might be helpful to say which company's shares they hold; another employee or ex-employee of that company may be able to offer guidance.
Are the shares in 2 different names? For smaller amounts it could be better to combine the holdings before selling, to reduce the selling fees. For larger amount it could be better to keep them separate, to avoid CGT.

    Thank you for your replies.

The shares are Laura Ashley shares - these are the only shares they own.

They both hold share individual share certificates.

At the moment I have no idea no of shares but I really don't think it's a large amount.

Just spoken with Hubby and he thinks that their bank would be able to sort this out for them...............

Laura Ashley and quoted on the london stock exchange

you can find out the price either on line or look in the financial share price pages of the newspapers (listed under 'retailers' as 'Ashley L'

    currently about £0.21 a share.

a bank will be able to arrange to sell them if you have a share certificate

Some companies (I believe Hargreaves Lansdown) will deal with the whole process of selling and investing in their ISA which could save you a lot of hassle.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
  • Can you clarify what you mean by 'sell these shares and Invest in an ISA'

An ISA is not a product, merely a wrapper. Do you mean they wish to sell the shares and set up a cash ISA?

Yes - I mean they wish to sell these shares and put the proceeds of sale into an exisitng ISA.

    Thanks

Monica - if you want to put the proceeds of their share sale into an existing cash ISA, don't use Hargreaves Lansdown. HL's "Bed & ISA" service referred to above would put them into a Stocks & Shares ISA. You could use a bank but ask about their fee. If they want to charge 2 fees (because there are 2 holdings) you could combine their 2 holdings into 1 by using a Stock Transfer Form from the company registrar. This is free and may take a few weeks. The registrar for Laura Ashley is Computershare. They have a web site as linked below.

Thank you so much - this is exactly the type of information I was looking for.
