playstation from usa?

My 8 year old son wants a ps2 for his birthday and a relative is going on holiday to usa in a couple of weeks, does anyone know if its cheaper to buy the console and games out there? If not any recommendations for where to get one that is cheaper than the shops?

if you buy one over there uk-bought games wont work unless the console is chipped (you are not allowed to discuss chipping consoles here)

If you are quick enough Asda were selling them yesterday for £49.99...might be worth ringing your local store to see if any left

Don't know about ps2 specifically, but most US equipment is 110 volts and not all of it is switchable to 220/240 (as my friend found when she brought her $200 hair strengtheners over here !!) so you might need a uk power supply. Also the output will be NTSC (the US tv system) most new UK tv’s are capable of this but it’s worth checking
  • I did try and get one from asda but after phoning numerous stores found out that they only had 20 per store! Thanks for the advice on usa.
  • I wouldnt buy a US PS2, you will need so many convertors etc that there will be very little saving if any. if you were importing a PS3 then it would be different as the opertunity of getting one first is somthing worth paying for I think. also the hassle of having to import games for the US ps2 will be a pain.

wait a few weeks untill theps3 is out the ps2 prices will drop just look at asda droping them to £50 i would expect Tesco to do somthing similar soon.
