            They are effectively, the same thing. Anyone can APPLY, but not everyone will be allocated a property.
 You will be awarded points based on circumstances, including, but not limited to ;
 - Are you, or about to become unintentionally homeless?
 - Is your current property overcrowded / inhabitable?
 - Do you have children?
 - Are you disabled?
 The more points you have, the more chance you have of getting allocated a property.
 Certain areas will have a higher demand than others, so waiting lists will be longer.
 In general demand is a LOT higher than supply, so it’s generally not a good idea to expect to be given a property. Some people are on lists for years without success.

            With choice based lettings we found bidding on rural properties worked for us. We were on lowest band (bronze in my area). We bid on homes without ever imagining we'd get one. We were paying 750pcm for a nice house, but the LL made us feel we were in a holiday home, came round all the time, let himself in the house etc. Out of the blue we got a call about the house im now in. We were the 134th bidder on it!! but cos of its location nobody wanted it!!! There are just four HA homes in 2 sets of 2. In their own grounds with 80ft gardens!! Why nobody wanted it is cos its totally isolated. No shop, pub, school, bus service etc for miles!! But we love it!!
 Being less picky opens availablity.
 I looked at available homes and waiting lists and apparently in Burnley district there are more homes than people on the list!!!!! lol xxThe feeling i got when i confirmed my place studying criminology at Exeter Uni was brilliant!!!!!
 The pride my children told me they had in me was even better!!!!! # setting positive example to children is OUTSTANDING!!!! !:grouphug::grouphug::smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea0

            Determine which Housing Assoc runs the HA properties in your area and ask them....0

            The Direct Gov website has an explanation of how properties are allocated for council and housing associations, the general principles.
 Councils have some minor discretion on who they accept - for example, their definition of having a local link. I used to think that anyone who is a UK citizen over the age of 18 could apply for council housing (of course, few get it, it's so scarce) and they couldn't turn away any applications but then someone on this forum pointed out that Croydon Council point blank refuse to accept applications from low priority applicants.0

            Many councils have "transferred" ownership of their housing stock to housing associations, so you may not have "council housing" in your area anymore. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

            Council Houses are owned by..... the local council.
 Housing Association houses are owned by.... a Housing Association (charities).
 Some councils place their tenants in HA houses. But not all HA tenants are from the council.0
