I've just used a website called SourceForge. It offers open source software for free from developers.
I installed a program to rip CD's / convert files as I wanted to listen to a CD on my phone. It worked fine so I'd say this site is worth checking out. There are free games on there, too.
The downside is that a lot of the descriptions are a bit 'teccy' for laymen like me, so it may take a bit of trawling. I also suspect some of the software is 'work in progress'.
Anyway, as I'm new on here, I thought I'd share it with you all.

Sourceforge is a site for open source developers to collaborate and cooperate. Just be aware there are some (many) abandoned/slow to update projects on there, and not everything is production quality (often alpha builds and before). This is why it is quite techie - but it is always worth a search if looking to solve a problem that someone may have solved before.
You can also shorten typing sourceforge.net as sf.net ;-)0 -
Thanks very much Paddy. I guess you end up uninstalling some of the software. I hit it quite lucky as the program I installed did exactly what I needed ..... but I can imagine there are some not-so-good ones in there.0

Everything is generally well-intentioned, just frequently unfinished!
A good indication is to see how 'active' the project is, and only install builds marked as 'stable' or 'release', not 'beta' or 'alpha'!!0 -

No problem. I haven't tried the puzzle games yet, so please let me know if they're any good.0 -
I'm downloading a game from the website Vale46 recommended. Thanks for all the tips.0
