Ironically Chinese lanterns are banned in some parts of China precisely for these reasons.0

They were setting them off at Download Festival 2 years ago, the camping field is directly underneath the flightpath for East Midlands Airport and the planes are actually so low you can see faces in the windows.
They are dangerous, even with the improvements of removing the wire from them recently they pose risks to wildlife and grasslands, especially in the drier summer months.
My teenage daughter has been begging for some for years, I finally sat her down and showed her a few reasons via google why she should avoid them like the plague. This image being one:
