Recording Sky programmes

Excuse my ignorance, I'm hoping someone can give me some ideas here. Basically I have an old Sky box, and a Sky sports sub., which of course now gives me Sky F1 channel. My son is a great F1 fan, but doesn't have Sky. He wants me to record it for him, but I think I need a Sky + box to do this? Is it possible to record Sky using a Sony freeview recorder (also old, uses DVD)? I personally don't think it's possible but I may be totally wrong. If a new Sky + type box is needed do I need a Sky one or is there one on general sale in Currys or other electrical type stores? Any advice gratefully received.

You can play off the sky box and record onto a VCR.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Yes it's possible.
Prior to Sky+ I used to record using a JVC DVD recorder, it works in the same way that an old video recorder works. It used to turn on the Sky box at the time I set to record and it had an infra red gizmo that could change the channel on Sky.
With Sky+ you can copy recording off the disk onto an external DVD recorder.
I have no idea if your Sony DVD recorder is able to record from an external feed from the Sky box but I'm sure someone who knows will be able to answer that. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
I thought all the F1 races were still being shown on the Beeb, some live and some recorded.
I find the pictures better on Radio 5 Live.
Life was so much simpler in the days of VHS.
As above it should be possible to connect a DVD recorder to the VCR Scart connector on a Sky box, to record the F1 programmes, DRM permitting. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
If the old Sky box has one or more SCARTs, and the DVD recorder likewise has one or more SCARTs, then connect the Sky box to the recorder with a SCART lead.
Set the Sky box to the channel to be recorded
Set the recorder to select the SCART input that you've connected the lead to
Insert a blank DVD
Press Record.
Do you have the instruction manual for the recorder? This should tell you how to select the input (usually done with a TV/AV button, or by pressing Channel Select to go down, below 01)
As previous poster said, this is all assuming the F1 channel isn't encrypted, but if you can watch it, I assume it isn't, and your viewing card will decrypt it.0 -
I back up loads of recording from SKY => DVD. What I haven't done is record whilst watching live but i really don't see an issue?? Scart leads is all you need.0

As above, and you'll not get it in HD basically. Another option since you're kindof letting your son benefit from your Sky subscription is to let him have one of the 2 devices you're allowed to use Sky Go (computer, iOS, Android), by using your Sky login, which sounds like much less fuss than recording it etc.0

Thanks everyone, I passed your replies to my son, and left him to decide what he wanted me to do. He's got 1 day left to tell me, otherwise he'll do without.0
