Excessive Gas charges

I have been a MSE user for sometime. This is my first post. I moved into a semidetached house on the 30th of Nov 2011. I have received my first gas bill for 42 days(30th Nov till 12th Jan) of £688.74.

I have been told that i have used 1513 units.

I cannot understand how this is possible.

Can someone please help and tell me if this is a possibility of realistically using up that much of gas in a family house which is a victorian property with 4 bedrooms.

I am totally gutted!

P.S. The provider is Atlantic.

Quoting bill values is not the best road for assistance - what responders need to know how are the opening and closing meter readings were and how many Kwh were charged for, both of which will be on the bill

However - your £688 translates very roughly into 16,350 Kwh, which for a 42 day gas bill is astonomical

Check that the opening meter reading on the bill is the one you gave when you moved in, and check thet the closing meter reading is close to what your meter reads now and is not Estimated

Check the front of your meter, it will be marked either ft3 if it's an Imperial model, or m3 if it's a Metric model.
Next check your bill by dividing the Kwh charged for, by the meter units used
Ifr the answer is around 31 you are being charged for an Imperial meter - If it's around 11 you are being charged for a Metric meter
If the chargeing method does not match the meters face plate, Get onto your supplier immediately

    Welcome to your first post.

It's a slightly implausable consumption and I'm a little surprised that Atlantic have let it through without query:(. However stop "being told" and start taking "ownership" of your meter readings.

The first thing to do is to check the current meter reading. Is it close to the closing reading shown on the bill? Is the bill an estimate? Next, I take it you provided an opening reading when you moved in? Is the opening reading on the bill the same number as you provided? If you provided the reading could you have misread it:o? For example by submitting digits in red or after the point.

The main lesson for newbies posting bill £££s is to stop posting bill £££s and start posting meter readings if you want meaningful help.

Also get a handle on your consumption by taking daily readings for a week and then weekly readings for a month. Always check the bill for estimated readings and correct if not accurate.

As above. Actual or estimated readings? Metric or imperial units?
Do you have gas CH and DHW in the property?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
