If you can find out where they're hibernating, a pest controller (council or private) should be able to spray kill them, but unless you can block the holes, they could be back next year.
I came downstairs into the kitchen this morning and there were none there.
By the time I had switched the kettle on and let the dog out, there were several on the window. 10 minutes after that and they were dying on the sill.
This is an old house which suffered from subsidence previously and there are cracks in walls in loads of places. They could be coming from anywhere.
I can't see that I'm going to be able to narrow this down so I guess it's fly spray all round and loads of cleaning.Herman - MP for all!0 -
No suggestions I'm afraid but it's not a problem limited to old houses. I used to live in a 1980s built flat (in a small block). I regularly found dead flies on my bedroom windowsill. As with you, I never saw any flies flying around inside the flat and there was no obvious source. All I could do was chuck the bodies away.0

I would say cluster flies too, have them mainly in the attic. Pest controller will come out and deal with them but when I spoke to one he said it is just as effective to go up and spray with fly spray(have since found a company that do a 'smoke bomb' type thing to kill them off(best done when frosts are outside and the flies have come in)
Not easy to eradicate though, they tend to keep on returning to the 'chosen' house0 -
We had a few flies a few weeks ago. I think they over winter and now weather is warm as said they hatch not sure why they die at the window though although I have seen them before dead at window ledges0

Our upstairs ceilings are vaulted, i.e. there's only a small space between the roof and ceiling, filled with insulation, and no attic. The flies presumably get under the slates and into the insulated space, so if there are any gaps in the ceiling, they will eventually find their way into the (warmer) inside of the house. That's why I said earlier if you can track down the places they're getting in and block them, you can go a long way to solving the problem.
If you can spare the time, try to sit in the affected room for a half-hour or so, and see if you can find where they're getting in.A bank is a place that will lend you money if you can prove you don't need it.0 -
Not anywhere near the sea, window seals seem ok, trickle vents closed.
Just very strange how we don't see them appearing, we just see them there. Iyswim.Herman - MP for all!0 -
Just a little fly tale...
I was getting a lot in the lounge and couldn't work out where they were coming from. Then one day I saw 2 or 3 'young uns' emerge from the fireplace.
A few days previously I had chucked some left over meat on the fire. I didn't realise it hadn't burned through, Cue magotty meat remnants! :eek:0 -
