Voluntary Redundancy... very little time to decide!

We've been put on 2 week consultation, voluntary redundancy is an option (the other option is same job part time instead of full time).

But we've only been given 4 days to decide on voluntary redundancy.. and some vital information isn't being given to us until 7 days time (such as the new contract sizes).

Is this normal? seems very limited for someone to make a choice especially considering all 4 of those days I'll be at work.

Thank you for any information

Whether it is normal or not is irrelevant - that is your choice. Voluntary redundancy is entirely in the gift of the employer and they can attach whatever (non-discriminatory) conditions to it they wish.

If the only option is a part-time job then the chances are you will be mnade compulsorily redundant in due course, so you will need to weigh up the relative benefits of the two packages taking into consideration the extra salary you will earn in the meantime.

This is not voluntary redundancy unless that is a special extra option over turning down any alternative.

This is a redundancy situation they need to tell you what the package will be.

They are offering a potential alternative ask about the statutory 4 weeks trial that will give you time to find out the terms without losing the redundancy option.

And dont forget if you get made redundant in say a few months time your redundancy pay will be calculated on your lower hours.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • Thank you everyone...

I had actually not considered the situation of being made redundant on the lower hours contract in the future - very good point there
