If you have an e-reader then you can also buy chapters of the Lonely Planet books in PDF format. I've used this when I've been travelling to a city for business for a couple of days, and just bought the chapter from appropriate USA or Europe guide.

To be honest, it really does depend on your destination, how recently/thoroughly the book has been updated and how *you* like the book to be organized. Would you prefer all the information about a part of a city to be in one place e.g. accomodation, food, interesting things or do you prefer accomodation to be listed separately?

I've also had good experiences with Let's Go guides http://www.letsgo.com/. It's a US brand, but their Italy guidebook was very good, as was their Hawaii.

hi all nice to see this post still going. i had a short trip to france and learned a few things that have put me off travelling slightly.

-one is that the train is my only real option, cycling long distance isnt for me ( bad knee). so would have to budget for the long train journeys.
-two europe appears very expensive, in france water was £2 a small bottle, coffee £3 and a pint £5+.
-three- accomodation, really not sure i'm prepared to rough it, i've got used to a comfortable bed and privacy. also a light sleeper. not sure if i'd be happy in hostels with people 10 years younger partying every night!

anyway... just thought i'd update and let you know my thoughts.
