Main tyre air compressor?
Hi,
I was looking for mains powered tyre air compressor for my car as I already had a cigarette lighter one. Bought one of these:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MAINS-CIGARETTE-LIGHTER-CHARGER-ADAPTER-/250892033921?pt=UK_ConsumerElectronics_PowerAdaptors_SM&hash=item3a6a549f81
But I presume they are not good to power anything more than 5 amp, and that includes 12V air compressors.
Could someone please suggest:

Could someone please suggest:
- Fair priced Mains air compressor for car tyres
- Or an adaptor that would run a 12V mini air compressor
- Good quality mini air compressor. (the one I've is made in China and counting its last breaths I think)..

"Good quality mini air compressor."
I have one of these RAC 630 models. I use it for the car and also the motorhome which needs the tyres to go a lot higher pressure than the car (85psi or more). The RAC630 is rated to 100psi i think.
I needed to get a 10Amp rated extension cable for the rear wheels of the motorhome so I think that 5Amp mains adapter you have linked to would give up the ghost quite quickly.

Even worse - that unit is 450mA (just under half an amp) - likely to fizz before the first wheeze...
If you want to run your compressor from the mains, you'd probably have to rig up something similar to this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/240V-12V-UK-Converter-Transformer-Adapter-120W-Car-Tyre-Inflator-Pump-Coolbox-/170701199108?pt=UK_AudioElectronicsVideo_Video_TelevisionSetTopBoxes&hash=item27be959704 (just did a quick search, maybe something similar closer to home).
Do you need a powered one as you can't use a footpump? (I've tried powered and gone back to foot).0 -
How many amps will the compressor draw? I think mines about 8amps, But a bit more starting up. A possibly more when the pressure increases and the pump works harder. 15A fuse.
You maybe better off with a jumper pack to power it to a pack with a built in compressor.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Thank god someone has come along with a proper suggestion.
Those cig lighter powered compressors are a joke for anything other than emergencies. Use it for any length of time and you'll see it fall to bits. Yes they'll do 100PSI but thats no good without a worthwhile cubic feet per minute rating which is as important if not more important than it being 100PSI.0 -

We picked up one of those about 4-5 years ago, much easier and better than the 12v in car types, even just the fitting to the tyre valve is much better, let alone the fact it's not a wheezy little motor struggling to pump up a single bike tyre, let alone a car tyre.
You can pick up big compressors cheap or sometimes free if you're willing to collect from ebay sellers etc, the downside is the big ones do take up space and they are noisy.
We currently have the big compressor in the garage along with a variety of tools, and the small one for emergency use in the boot of the car.
The big one is the one that tends to get used on a regular basis for everything from bike tyres, to scooter and car tyres (I also got a small "silent" mains compressor for model work, but that would do car tyres at a pinch).0 -
I use one of these compressors - I do a lot of offroading, and they're great for re-inflating the tyres - very quick, completely reliable. Used by most of the off-road community, and make short work of my 65psi caravan tyres.

There is a cheaper single cylinder version of you don't want to spend that much and are happy to take a wee bit longer
(I also have a big mains powered 50 litre air compressor at home, and use that when not out travelling)0 -
Thank you all for the abundance of replies. While looking for one, I found this:

Any feedback please?
Marlot,
Is this the single cylinder one:

Can you recommend a mains adapter if I choose the paddock 12V compressor? This can serve both home and away I think..0
