Here's a link to the NHS leaflet listing the amounts available when claiming for glasses vouchers.

It's dependent on your own personal criteria so we wouldn't know what you're personally entitled to. If you believe you should be able to claim for both pairs of glasses suggest you give them a ring on 0845 610 1112.

do you really expect to get £72 back for a £50 spend?

LOL! Good point. I assume the OP thought they'd get the £50 back, not £72. You can claim up to £36.20 per pair. As each pair was under this, the expectation was probably that they wouldn't have to pay anything.

Here are the amounts you can claim.

    Sight tests
If you meet the criteria described on page 5 you
will be entitled to a free NHS funded sight test.
NHS voucher values for glasses and
    contact lenses
    Optical vouchers
Maximum value for each pair of glasses
    or contact lenses
    • Single vision A £36.20
    B £55.10
    C £80.60
    D £182.00
    • Bifocal E £62.70
    F £79.70
    G £103.30
    H £200.10
    • Hospital Eye I £186.40
    department
    • Complex lens – single vision £13.70
    • Complex lens – bifocal £34.60
    Supplements to vouchers
    Where necessary.
    for each lens
    • Prism Single vision £11.80
    Bifocal £14.20
    • Tint Single vision £4.00
    Bifocal £4.50
    • Photochromic Single vision £4.00
    Other lenses £4.50
    • Special frames up to £59.70

What's not clear is (a) what you're personally entitled to (it will depend on your circumstances/need) or (b) whether you can claim for more than one pair. However it does say 'maximum value for each pair of glasses' which suggests you can claim for more than one pair.

You're going to have to give them a ring, I guess.

You only "need" 1 pair, getting 2 is just because you want them.

Hence you only get the benefit for one pair.
