Cat litter on compost heap?

I use a wooden granule cat litter and have recently been adding fairly small amounts of it to the compost heap as it should presumably rot down pretty well ( pee, not poop! )
There really is no odour from this litter when it has been used in the tray, or even when I put it in my kitchen bin, but I have noticed that the compost bin now REEKS of cat pee.
Is this just a chemical reaction when the litter breaks down and will it dissipate, as normally my compost smells lovely and sweet when well rotted.
I am sure I have heard stories of people peeing on their own compost heap to help the rotting, so am I right in presuming that this cat litter is actually a good thing to be adding to the heap?

I have to say, I tend to use fine clay clumping and whilst the poop gets scooped into the non recycling, the clay after its done it's best is thrown in there too.
I've not used wood because they prefer fine clumping and it's easier to clean.
Cat pee smell is impossible to erradicate, it'll be fine on the heap but stink. The pellets may have something in them you'd not want on the heap or may stop them breaking down. Similarly the wood is coming into contact with the poop, so it'll still contain similar diseases. If it's going onto flowers, no probs, veg I'd be more warey of.
Saying that, my grandfather used to compost all the meat and bones from his food and never had a problem.Tim0 -
I don't grow veg so that is not a problem and anyway the cats have access to the garden so tend to poop out there most of the time, but do like an overnight wee in the litter tray.;)0
