NPB and 2nd chance offer

Sold an item last night to a bidder who appears to have been watching all along and has bid on 3 separate occasions (i.e. I assume not automated as they've not always been the highest bidder).

Get a message this morning asking to cancel last bid as they bid in error.

Looking at their feedback (7) his last comment from buying a similar item was the seller saying "worst buyer I've ever dealt with".

I've appear to have a good quality 2nd chance offer but that lets the failing bidder off the hook.

Do I have to wait the 4 days before NPB and risk losing the 2nd chance or is there a better way of dealing with this ?

The problem is you have a winner and a second chance offer does not mean that you cancel the original sale.

The only safe way of going to a SCO is to close the first transaction down first, either by a mutual or by a full NPB. Only then can you go for the SCO safely.

And if I mutually cancel then my naughty 'winning' bidder gets away with it ?

You can only mutually cancel if they agree. I would do an NPB & hope they don't pay.
You do have to wait for 4 days & then close it 4 days after.
At least if they don't pay they get a strike.
You do of course run the risk that they'll pay up & leave bad FB & stars.

So really it's rock and hard place  - He (or she) has FB of 7 but 8 retractions in last 6 months and I'm now held to ransom - either cancel and he gets to fight another day or NPB and risk trashing my FB/stars

If a non payer doesn't pay before you close the case they cannot leave feedback.

They could, I would take the chance that they wouldn't pay & do the NPB, if others had they would by now be blocked from bidding on most items.

How does the second chance thing work if you have to wait before contacting the under bidder? As a buyer I have had a couple of second chance offers within 10mins. of the auction ending, unique items so not a case of the seller selling two on one listing.

If a seller has more than one identical item they can start doing SCOs on those duplicate items as soon as auction ends. I do it a lot.

If there's no chance the seller would have 2 of the same item, it could be that the winner immediately said they didn't want it & the seller did either a mutual, or just let it drop.
The more cynical among us would say, maybe they're shill bidding.
