The egg on my desk as I write this is stamped ...
3UK11510
B/B24MAR
O = Organic (IIRC, this also implies free range)
1 = Free range
2 = Barn
3 = Cage
UK = Country of origin
11510 = Farm ID
B/B24MAR = Best Before 24 March
Ive got to say, thats really interesting and helpful0 -

The extra cost is worth it to help move towards a future where animals are treated properly.
But the extra money won't go towards that! egg producers will treat hens as good as the law says they should treat them, and no better.
After HFW's attempt to get us to all eat free range the producers couldn't cope with the extra demand, so the government lowered the standards so birds that are not really free range can be labeled free range.The quality of a non free range egg is also much lower - ever noticed the difference in yolk colour?
The yolk colour has no effect, and is no indication of the quality of the egg.0 -
We buys Asda 'Cooks' eggs, 36 for £2.98 or so, well, until yestererday when we noticed they'd gone up to £3.10 AND they'd reduced the pack size to 300

I suspect that producers add colouring to the feed to get deeper yellow egg yolks. I can't find organic locally though.0

Yes, egg yolks are required to be within a specific colour range. The feed can't always make the yolk the right colour so they add colouring to the feed to ensure the yolk always meets the colour standard.0 -
. I'm a cheap egg person so get barn laid eggs which are probably just as bad as caged but not quite as good as full free range. I don't trust the word free range anyway. If I wanted a true free range egg I'd buy it from a local person who keeps hens.
The definitions for caged, barn, free range and organic are available on the old DEFRA site.0 -

I was buying the 89p tesco free range ones, but the quality was pretty awful. So have started buying ours from our local saturday indoor market, they are local free range and £1 for 60
