Egg price rise?? Where's the cheapest free range eggs??

According to the news there is going to be an egg shortage and prices will probably rise!
I never pay more than 99p for 6 large free range eggs and 89p for medium.

Lidl, Aldi, B&M stores and Home Bargains always have eggs at or below my target price and some small shops also.
How much do you pay for your eggs and where are the cheapest prices??

That egg shortage is due to the ban on tiny cages being implemented. It will make free range eggs on the shelf slightly cheaper as producers fight for customers switching from the cheap caged eggs. However, it will be more expensive for consumers who normally consume caged hen eggs. This includes many food manufacturers such as cake, biscuit, pasta and mayonnaise manufacturers who will see the price of the eggs they buy double in price which will then be passed on by increasing the price of those products.

I pick mine up for about £1 for 12. I'm a cheap egg person so get barn laid eggs which are probably just as bad as caged but not quite as good as full free range. I don't trust the word free range anyway. If I wanted a true free range egg I'd buy it from a local person who keeps hens.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Asda have The Happy Egg Co. eggs on offer at 2 x 6 packs for £2.
That's both medium and large for the same £2 per dozen price.

    Single boxes (6) - medium - £1.70 - large - £1.90

They've just been talking to an 'egg farmer' on Bbc breakfast, the rise in the price of eggs is 'cos of new regulations that have meant better conditions and more room for the chickens, so we are paying for these new cages. However although they've been implemented in the UK, Europe is lagging behind which means the British producers have to compete against others with lower costs.

It's been known for some years that new EU regulations on egg production were coming into force on 1st January 2012. So all the money that was needed to be spent to implement these changes should already have been spent well before the start of this year, so there's no reason why there should be any further increases in the price of eggs.

Yes, that's what some people are saying. However the UK has also failed to meet the deadline as well.

Perhaps this is even more of a reason more of us should make room for a couple of chucks in our back gardens.

Sometimes at work, we have some eggs for sale for colleagues only that are inbetween the display until and use by dates (the gap is 5-7 days) and I have been ok using eggs a fortnight after the ub date anyway. Cost for the last box of eggs I bought like this - 45p for 6 (organic).

Failing that - £1 for 10 in Iceland.
  • Just sorted a part of the garden for a chicken coop (cheaper than you would think - ours is costing only £99 online.

I buy my eggs from my local greengrocer (Monty's) ... £1 for six medium free range but they are more like large eggs and they are lovely. Good to support your local shops!!

I get ours from Aldi at 15 for £1.99 or Asda when they have 15 for £2. My friend sells 6 for £1 from her own hens so I will get them from her if the others go up. We have a few people around locally who sell them at 6 for £1 from their own hens.
